Chris Waller has a long-held habit of unearthing classy two-year-olds early in the season, and Fireball looks the latest to fit that mould after a strong debut win.
The Snitzel colt impressed from the outset, powering home to capture Saturday’s Schweppes Handicap (1100m) at Rosehill, joining previously successful Waller juveniles such as Brazen Beau and Omei Sword.
“If they do, it’s normally a pretty good one. They get there on their own without doing much work,” Waller said.
“He’s a lovely colt. (Syndicator) James Harron and his team buy nice horses so that’s the first box ticked. It makes my job easier.
“All of my staff have said he’s a very professional horse. We haven’t asked him to do anything at home, and they keep saying, ‘he will go the next step’.
“It’s always a good sign when they come out and do it pretty raw and not pushed. He’s had two soft trials, and he’s done a great job today.”
A $460,000 purchase at the Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale, Fireball is expected to be spelled ahead of a targeted Golden Slipper campaign.
Waller’s pre-Christmas runners are few, yet those who do emerge often deliver later-season results.
Global Quest and Shaquero are two recent examples—both Breeders’ Plate winners who progressed to high-level success, with Shaquero going on to claim the Magic Millions Classic.
Fireball ($8) scored by a decisive length, defeating Tigroni ($11), who covered extra ground but stuck on bravely, while Euripedes ($8) finished third.
Tommy Berry, who rode the colt in his second trial, said Fireball’s natural improvement would come as distances rise.
“He’s going to be lovely when he gets to 14(00 metres), maybe even a mile, so they’ve got options,” Berry said.
Bookmakers have installed him at $34 in early Golden Slipper markets.
