Flemington awaits Somethings Burnin’ in quest for redemption

Leading trainer Chris Waller has a wealth of promising colts at his disposal.

Four of Waller’s colts are set to contest the Run To The Rose at Rosehill this Saturday, while at Flemington, his three-year-old colt stable is divided between the Poseidon Stakes (1100m) and the Michael Moroney (1400m).

Somethings Burnin’ is scheduled to race in the latter, a distance Waller believes could be a launchpad for the Group 1 Caulfield Guineas (1600m) on October 10.

The colt broke his maiden status at Sandown over 1200m when resuming on August 19, and then returned to the same track on September 2, finishing second in a field of five.

Waller described the colt’s performance at his last start as unfortunate.

“Blake (Shinn) said he was a bit keen and thought he would take him down behind the other runners and it might shut him down a touch,” Waller said.

“If he stayed out behind the other runners, he might have got a bit free and as soon as he got down there, he was snookered.

“He was travelling a bit too well to come back behind the heels and come around.

“It wasn’t easy watching it, but when he explained it to me, I was comfortable.”

The Michael Moroney Stakes has a proven record of producing Caulfield Guineas winners, with Griff successful in 2024. Waller indicated that Somethings Burnin’ could indeed target the stallion-making contest next month.

“He could be,” Waller confirmed.

“I was thinking he didn’t have too hard a run last time, so he can back up here on the nice big track, whereas he could go to Caulfield and have another bad luck story.”

Godolphin’s colt Diameter will also line up alongside Somethings Burnin’ on Saturday. Diameter is second-up, having secured a third-place finish over 1300m at Rosehill last month.

Ben Melham has been booked for the ride on Somethings Burnin’, with Sydney-based Jason Collett to partner Diameter.
