For the first time in history, the 2026 Cox Plate will not be staged at Moonee Valley, with Flemington officially awarded hosting rights for the famous weight-for-age contest.

This year’s Cox Plate will be the last at the Valley before the venue shuts down for an extensive redevelopment and track reshaping project.

The decision was confirmed on Wednesday after Racing Victoria, in consultation with the Moonee Valley Racing Club, completed an Expression of Interest process. The Melbourne Racing Club had also submitted a proposal to run the race after the Caulfield Cup Carnival but was ultimately overlooked.

Flemington will now hold the 2026 Cox Plate a week before the Melbourne Cup Carnival, with a nine-race program to include the Moonee Valley Gold Cup (2500m), offering its winner direct entry into the Melbourne Cup.

Racing Victoria said the transfer was influenced by wagering forecasts, attendance potential, engagement opportunities and commercial returns, with Flemington considered the best venue to showcase the Cox Plate during Moonee Valley’s rebuild.

Victoria Racing Club chief executive Kylie Rogers welcomed the announcement.

“This will be an historic occasion, bringing tens of thousands of Australians together to enjoy the day,” Rogers said.

“We thank Racing Victoria, the Moonee Valley Racing Club and our commercial partners for their collaboration and can’t wait to see the collective vision for a Cox Plate at Flemington come to life.

“It sets the scene for an unforgettable spring at Flemington, where the world’s best come together.”

MVRC chief executive Michael Browell said it was a unique moment in the race’s long history.

“The MVRC looks forward to partnering with the VRC to create an exceptional event for members of both clubs and racegoers as we showcase Australia’s Best Race at Flemington,” Browell said.
