Ben, Will and J D Hayes’ Lindsay Park yard was disappointed to see their fillies bypassed for the Golden Slipper at Rosehill.
The top juvenile race in Australia had Medicinal as emergency two and Gin Twist as three.
Hayes was upset neither broke into the 16-horse Group 1 from last Saturday, with no late dropouts.
“It’s a shame we didn’t get in,” Hayes said.
“You win a Stakes race, and you normally get in, but this year it was just so open.
“They were taking their turns in winning and with the prize money so strong in New South Wales, we ended up just missing out.”
The Hayes operation kept Gin Twist, the Golden Slipper‘s third emergency, down in Melbourne.
She scored down Flemington’s straight on February 28 and lines up again Saturday in the Group 3 Thoroughbred Breeders Stakes (1200m).
Preceding that was a low-key 800m jump-out at Flemington last week where she was third.
“We made the decision to not even send her up,” Hayes said.
“It didn’t look like she was any chance of getting a run, so we took the opportunity of giving her a jump-out at home instead.”
Sired by Golden Slipper winner Home Affairs, Gin Twist was dominant in her Listed 1000m straight win on February 28.
“She’s had that experience down the straight and hopefully that will hold her in good stead on Saturday,” Hayes said.
Medicinal went to Sydney for a slim Golden Slipper hope, leaving Gin Twist behind.
Per Hayes, the filly faces a Sydney trial before tackling the Percy Sykes Stakes (1200m) at Randwick April 11.
