World Alliance, known for his impressive performances when resuming, will lead Matthew Smith’s contingent at Randwick during what promises to be a packed weekend for the trainer.
Smith is set to have runners across three states as he looks to maintain his excellent start to the year. Heading into Thursday’s Scone meeting, his stable had already recorded six wins, including a midweek success with Idle Flyer at Warwick Farm.
“The horses are going well. We had a good day Wednesday and we’ve had a good last couple of weeks,” Smith said.
“We’ve got a busy weekend. We’ve got Friday night at Moonee Valley, Saturday in Brisbane and Saturday at Randwick. They’re all over the place this week.”
On Saturday, World Alliance will make his return in the ATC Business Connect Sprint (1000m), aiming to extend his flawless first-up record, having won all three of his previous fresh runs.
Smith had initially hoped to find a slightly easier race for his return but remains confident in the five-year-old’s condition. With just 52kg on his back, he believes the gelding is well placed.
“He is good first-up, he’s got no weight on his back and he is in good nick,” Smith said.
“He is trialling well, his work has been good. I think he’ll run a good race and then we’ll try to find something a bit more suitable.
“I think there are some nice races for him and he can continue to go through the handicaps. He’s a nice, horse sound.”
Reece Jones has been booked to ride World Alliance ($11), one of four runners Smith will send to Randwick. Another promising contender from the stable is Winston Hills ($15), who is considered an each-way with Aussie betting apps hope in the Mostyncopper Handicap (1200m).
Meanwhile, Smith’s interstate presence includes the speedy Wondereach, set to race at Moonee Valley on Friday night, and Final Reset, a last-start winner, representing the stable at Doomben.
