Emerging gelding Sarrismo, fresh from booking his Big Dance ticket, targets his next mission – proving his mettle in black-type ranks during the Listed The Coast at Gosford.
Maintaining a perfect top-three record through nine starts, the gelding has chained three wins this season, building from Warwick Farm and Doomben results to claim the Orange Cup (1600m) on April 19 and enter Big Dance eligibility.
Tom Charlton views the $3 million feature at Randwick on Melbourne Cup Day as Sarrismo’s grand plan, but prioritizes testing the four-year-old in stakes racing this coming Saturday.
“That will be his primary aim in the spring,” Charlton said of the Big Dance.
“I guess we just work out whether this will finish him for the campaign, or whether we push on for one more run.
This preparation, he seems to be putting it together. He’s won his three runs, and looks to be stepping forward each time.
It’s his toughest test, but it looks like the right option to have a crack.”
Andrew Adkins, aboard for the Orange victory, continues riding Sarrismo in the $500,000 Gosford prize, where the weight lightens to 53kg from 61kg.
The lineup features Group 2 champ Depth Of Character and recent scorer Rotagilla, making it a sharp indicator for Sarrismo, who’s favourite at $4.80 courtesy of early faith in his upside.
“He will have to improve, but he’s drawn well so he should naturally be able to be ridden in a forward position, which should suit him,” Charlton said.
“We will see where he fits into that next grade.”
An early forfeit of Cristal Clear by trainers Annabel and Rob Archibald leaves 11 in The Coast, seven of whom command $10 or tighter quotes in a fluid betting scene.
