Getafix’s reputation has been brewing for some time, and he finally stamped his authority at Randwick with a thrilling win in the TAB Handicap (1400m), nosing out Cool Jakey in the final bound.

The three-year-old, trained by John O’Shea and Tom Charlton, was a Golden Rose nominee last season and has taken time to fulfil that early promise, but Saturday’s effort was a major step forward.

“The things you can see him do in the mornings if you ask him to do them, he’s a big, powerful horse,” Charlton said.

“He has got good capability of going to stakes level in time.

“We will just keep building his confidence. He is a real confidence horse. He’s got the ability to feature in good races.”

Under Jason Collett, Getafix ($4) was held up on the fence before storming through late to defeat Cool Jakey ($6.50) by a nose, with favourite It’s A Knockout ($2.05 betting choice) third, a length behind.

Charlton praised the colt’s effort, especially given he was tackling older opposition in a benchmark 88 event.

“At the end of their two-year-old season, he and Linebacker were the ones we thought could shape up pretty well and he has just taken a bit more time to work towards that,” Charlton said.

Linebacker is also nearing a return with a barrier trial in a month and the Epsom Handicap in October in sight.

Royal Supremacy also made headlines earlier in the day, breaking through in the Eremein Handicap (1800m) after multiple Group placings in Europe.

Assistant trainer Johann Gerard-Dubord said they will now freshen him for a spring campaign.

“There are some nice races. There is a race like the Metrop if he’s up to better and all those Cup races so hopefully he will keep going the right way and we’ll see a lot more of him,” he said.
