Giga Kick has added another elite trophy to his resume, claiming the Group 1 VRC Champions Sprint (1200m) at Flemington to become a Group 1 winner in three different states.
Fresh from a brilliant second-up win in the Group 2 Schillaci Stakes (1100m) at Caulfield, the six-year-old finished powerfully through heavy ground under Mark Zahra, edging out Magic Time after a head-bobbing contest.
Giga Kick ($5.00) defeated Magic Time ($11) by a head, with Joliestar ($2.70 fav) finishing 1-1/4 lengths away in third, while Tentyris, who was prominent in the market, was withdrawn at the gates.
Trainer Clayton Douglas was full of admiration for his stable star, who rose to prominence when winning The Everest as a three-year-old.
“He’s a champ this horse and I love him,” Douglas said.
“He’s taken me around the country and given me so many big days.”
Douglas said targeting the Champions Sprint over The Everest this year was a deliberate long-range play.
“We aimed him for this race and we got it done,” he said.
Zahra capped a massive week with his eighth win of Cup week and third at Group 1 level.
“Magic Time looked like she might hold on, but the old boy dug in late and got there,” Zahra said.
“It’s a great feeling.”
