Mick Price insists he isn’t overreaching with Globe by targeting this Saturday’s The Might And Power at Caulfield, arguing the $1 million Group 1 sets up neatly for his gelding from a tactical perspective.
One of just nine entries for the 2000-metre weight-for-age, the seven-year-old son of Charm Spirit faces a steep rise from open handicaps against the likes of Treasurethe Moment and Buckaroo, but projects as the likely lone leader—exactly what Price and co-trainer Michael Kent Jnr have in mind.
“That’s the attraction for Globe, that he gets left alone,” Price said.
“He’s not as good as the others, but it doesn’t matter. He’ll bowl along in front, he’ll give plenty of cheek.”
The assignment marks Globe’s first Group 1 attempt and first run in Stakes grade since finishing second-last in April’s Group 3 Victoria Handicap (1400m). His lone start at 2000m was last year’s Ballarat Cup, where he finished third behind Berkeley Square.
This preparation, he resumed with a second over 1523m at Moonee Valley (Aug 23), followed by a fourth over 1700m at Flemington (Sept 13), before being nabbed late by Charterhouse at Sandown (Sept 27)—never beaten more than half a length in any run.
Globe is also nominated for Rosehill’s $2m Group 2 Hill Stakes (1900m), but Price says a Sydney raid would only be entertained if a wet track looms. Despite early-week showers, the outlook trends fine and sunny into Saturday.
Stablemate Hezashocka is among The Might And Power entries, with a start undecided. Other nominees include Light Infantry Man, Attrition and Kingswood (also in the Hill Stakes), alongside Charterhouse and Whisky On The Hill.
The Might And Power headlines a trio of Group 1s at Caulfield, joined by the Caulfield Guineas and the Toorak Handicap, both run over 1600m.
