Godolphin is hoping to add to its contenders in the upcoming three-year-old features when they run a couple of up-and-coming types at Caulfield.

Brigantine and his James Cummings-trained stablemate Athelric are down to run in the Caulfield Guineas Prelude (1400m) at Caulfield on Saturday.

Athelric may not have an entry into the 2021 Caulfield Guineas, while Brigantine will be out to put his hand up for the Group 1 contest over 1600m on October 9 with a forward showing on Saturday.

Brigantine has found form this campaign with a maiden win on the Kensington track and again at Randwick with those victories separated by a fading run in the Up And Coming Stakes at Kembla Grange on August 14.

The son of Astern led up on that occasion before winning against the older horses at Randwick on September 4.

“He brings that bit of experience down to Melbourne and he’s well-weighted in a set weights and penalties race,” Cummings said.

“We love the way he has been training on his Melbourne leg and who’s to say he might not be a rather confident and capable second-stringer for our stable in the Caulfield Guineas.”

Godolphin already has the $2.50 favourite Anamoe aimed at the Guineas who is also the $2 top elect for next week’s Group 1 Golden Rose in Sydney.

Cummings said it was an experiment stepping Athelric up to 1400m after his last start second to Mynumerouno over 1200m at The Valley on September 4.

“He’s a horse that is bred for speed, so it’s quite experimental that we are stepping him up to seven furlongs,” Cummings said.

“We like the way he is going. He’s been training like a last-start winner and Olly (Damien Oliver) is quite bullish about the horse.”
