Berkeley Square’s trainer Dan O’Sullivan and connections show no signs of abandoning Adelaide Cup hopes amid big weight and inside barrier.
Having cut his training teeth in Adelaide before Ballarat base, O’Sullivan snared the 2008 Cup with Lacey Underall.
Yet the Adelaide Cup (3200m) at Morphettville on Monday gains added lustre with the gelding’s backers largely Adelaide folk.
The yard turned into a frenzy after Berkeley Square’s back-to-back Ballarat Cup (2000m) score in December, though Monday success could unleash pandemonium for the veteran.
“It would be good to go back and do it again, especially for his owners who are Adelaide based,” O’Sullivan said.
“Some haven’t seen race for a little while.”
Berkeley Square stares down a steep hurdle.
At 59.5kg, his impost outstrips Hyperno’s 1978 and Gallic’s 2007 Cup-winning weights by 1.5kg under metric rules from 1973.
Helping matters, the 53kg base weight rose 3kg post-Bohemiath’s win entering the 2000s, while Gallic prevailed from 53kg.
He gained entry lugging 61.5kg home over 2500m Flemington February 14, Luke Nolen sticking for Monday’s mount.
“It was a good ride,” O’Sullivan said.
“He looked after the horse and made sure he ran the trip out with the view of going up to two miles.
“I’ve got no problems with the trip. I think he can do whatever we want him to do.
“He’s never done that and you want to see it, but it won’t be easy with the weight, but he is a big bugger, and he has the form on the board.
“He is a Group 2 winner and has done a lot more than some of the others in the race.”
O’Sullivan reports smooth sailing since Flemington, with gallops keeping Berkeley Square primed.
“I’m happy with where he’s at and we’ve just got to get him over there safely and he’ll be right to go,” O’Sullivan said.
