Here To Shock delivered an unforgettable victory for Lindsay Park trainers Ben, Will, and J D Hayes, securing their first-ever international Group 1 win in New Zealand.
The experienced gelding was aimed at the BCD Group Sprint (1400m) at Te Rapa on Saturday, and the ambitious move paid off with a triumphant performance.
Trainer Ben Hayes explained that their decision to contest the race stemmed from Here’s To Shock’s impressive win in the inaugural The Supernova (1400m) at Pakenham in December.
“We were thinking after the Supernova of where we would take him,” Hayes said.
The team originally considered running against Mr Brightside but ultimately chose New Zealand after discussions with Rob Slade. Hayes highlighted the gelding’s strong traveling ability, fitness, and excellent form as key factors in their choice.
“The race we were thinking of was taking on Mr Brightside today, but we had a chat with Rob Slade and because he’s such a good traveller, he’s in form with good residual fitness on his side, so we decided to head there.
It looked a good race for him to get a Group 1 to his name. We thought it was the right race to target and now he’s a Group 1 winner.”
Under the guidance of jockey Nash Rawiller, Here’s To Shock showed early speed and settled on the pace, although he raced a touch keenly. Upon entering the straight, he surged forward, establishing a commanding lead and storming home to an emphatic win.
The victory marked an important milestone for the Hayes brothers, securing their first Group 1 triumph outside Australia.
“It’s a huge thrill,” Hayes said.
Here’s To Shock has been a standout performer for Lindsay Park since joining their stable, and this latest achievement adds to his growing legacy.
“That’s a massive thrill. It’s the first international Group 1 win for Lindsay Park in our partnership.”
Hayes also praised Rawiller, who has built a strong connection with the horse and maintained an excellent record when riding him.
“Nash has a really good bond with this horse, he’s got a great record on him. He was a little bit keen in the run today, but he did everything right.”
The win was an emotional moment for the Lindsay Park team.
“I’m shaking, J D’s thrilled as well. It’s a massive result.”
