Craig Williams showcased his trademark precision at Caulfield, delivering a flawless ride to claim the newly boosted million-dollar edition of the Thoroughbred Club Stakes.
The Group 3 feature, now worth seven figures after being shifted from October to November, offered three-year-old sprinting fillies a rare chance to compete for substantial prizemoney so late in the spring.
Trained by Anthony and Sam Freedman, Inkaruna ($5) proved too sharp, stretching clear to win by 1½ lengths over longshot Kujenga ($41), with the heavily supported My Gladiola ($1.90) holding third.
Williams said the filly’s early manners were instrumental in the performance.
“She stood well in the gates, got a nice start, was able to control where I wanted to,” Williams said.
“She was a little bit on the bridle and had a nice smooth run (and) the blinkers have worked really well.
“I had the right horse to win a million-dollar race here.”
After a strong runner-up finish behind Point Barrow at Flemington just days earlier, Inkaruna arrived primed for Saturday’s assignment.
Williams said beating the favourite required clarity and confidence.
“The grey My Gladiola, the top weight was the horse we all had to beat – she’s a superstar but we had to just go out there and ride our own race,” he said.
“I spoke to Sam this morning at depth about what we want to do with her.
“The first part was get her out nice and clean.
“We got into a nice rhythm, had the right horse to follow into the race, and then she was a really good and strong late.”
Jamie Mott later noted that My Gladiola may have been feeling the effects of a long preparation, finishing flatter than usual.
