Run Lucy Run possesses real quality according to Glenn Thornton, but tapping into it consistently hinges on patience that he trusts will deliver gains ahead.
The Gold Coast resident, formerly training in Victoria, is honing his 2026 team of 12 runners, as Run Lucy Run looks to replicate her latest score in the Gordon’s Gin Class 4 Handicap (1350m) from Ipswich last Friday.
January 31 saw the four-year-old mare prevail at the same venue and distance, with a good track rating set to benefit her.
It marked the end of defeats unbroken since December 2024.
“She’s done really well since and there is no reason why she can’t go well again,” Thornton said.
“She usually improves through her preps and doesn’t go backwards.
“Last time, if we couldn’t win we were in a bit of trouble.
She debuted in betting at $3.40 but has been backed into $2.50 after Noble Decree’s scratching Thursday afternoon.
Her gate improved from 11 to eight with two other absentees.
“She’s performed in better class races than this,” Thornton added.
“If she’s getting closer to where she was as a three-year-old then she’ll run well.
Thornton followed family to Queensland five years back – Damien riding Run Lucy Run, alongside Boris and Stephanie – and values the lifestyle.
Metro aspirations loom for Run Lucy Run, though another Ipswich victory satisfies in the interim.
“We were happy to go back to Ipswich knowing it was a good surface and, unless they get rain on the day, they usually dish up a reliable track.
