Killiana may not have secured the rich rewards on offer in The Showdown, but she bounced back in style at Bendigo on Saturday with a determined win under the VOBIS Gold banner.

The daughter of Brazen Beau claimed the $250,000 VOBIS Gold Rush, earning an additional $30,000 in bonuses as part of the VOBIS incentive scheme.

It was only the third outing for Killiana, who began her career with an eye-catching victory at the same track. Trainer J D Hayes, part of the Lindsay Park team, was thrilled with the result from the $160,000 Inglis Premier yearling.

“She’s very, very fast and these VOBIS races that are put on, it’s just so good to have them with such good prizemoney attached, it makes it very easy to target them,” he said.

“A filly like her, we’ll sit back and see what the plans is next, but she’s done a good job this time in.

“I’m really proud of this filly, to be able to pick herself up after her Showdown run, month between runs with a tick-over jumpout, it’s just a credit to all out team and the facilities we have.”

It was back-to-back wins in the VOBIS Gold Rush for Hayes and his brothers Ben and Will, following last year’s success with Bold Bastille.

As with Bold Bastille, early speed was a weapon for Killiana, but jockey Michael Dee found himself caught wide after an early attempt to go forward failed.

Favourite backers who took the $2.30 on betting site would have been nervous halfway down the straight as she struggled to hit top gear, but she rallied strongly to edge out Salty Pearl ($17) by a neck, with Wintery ($17) closing well for third, 1-1/4 lengths back.

“She has a lot of speed and unfortunately she wasn’t able to cross over, so she did it the hard way and sat three-wide, but gave a good kick. It was a good effort,” Dee said.
