King ready to reign first-up in the San Domenico Stakes

Gerald Ryan and Sterling Alexiou will be out to land another early spring feature when talented colt King Of Pop resumes in Saturday’s Group 3 San Domenico Stakes (1100m) at Rosehill.

Already a Group winner as a juvenile, King Of Pop captured the Black Opal Stakes before finishing runner-up to North England in April’s Kindergarten Stakes (1100m). He has been readied for his return with two trials, the most recent behind Bonita Queen at Canterbury impressing his co-trainer.

“His second trial was really good and it was good to get that sort of trial into him after they were pushed back a bit,” Sterling Alexiou said. “He’s got a solid foundation for his first-up run now. He’s come back really well.”

Stablemate Blitzburg was also being aimed at the San Domenico but has been ruled out after pulling up sore from his unplaced effort in the Rosebud. He will instead be targeted at the Heritage Stakes (1100m) later in the spring. “He pulled up pretty sore after the race… We’ll probably wait until the Heritage,” Alexiou said.

The stable’s third string, Grand Eagle, is set to resume in easier company before being given the chance to progress to the Ming Dynasty and even the Golden Rose if his form warrants it. Like King Of Pop, he is by Golden Slipper hero Farnan and showed strong ability with wins at Hawkesbury and Randwick in April.
