Kris Lees adds to his stellar history at the Provincial-Midway Championships Final, grabbing the $1 million race for a sixth time and the exacta too.

The top three echoed 12 months prior in new positions: Lord Of Biscay ($3.50 fav), runner-up then, rocketed clear for a three-length margin over stablemate Imposant ($21), ahead of titleholder Matcha Latte ($4).

Six wins from 12 Provincial-Midway Championships Final (1400m) starts since 2015’s varied format mark Lees’ record, though the humble local trainer shared praise.

“We’re the biggest stable in the provincials, we’re entitled to have a good representation, but full credit to all the staff at home to get these horses presented on the day and they raced really well,” Lees said.

“He got a perfect run in transit. I was very confident in the run with him. He was getting all the favours he needed, and he reacted well.”

Lees’ wife Kristy, with ownership in Imposant the loser, might have mixed feelings.

“My wife owns that one. Anyway, she ran well in the race last year, and she has run well again today, so good result,” he said of Imposant.

From European shores, Lord Of Biscay eased into Australian life and now thrives after a year.

His path likely leads to Tamworth Cup (1400m) April 24 for entry to Big Dance (1600m) at Randwick Melbourne Cup Day, beyond last year’s seventh.

James McDonald, aboard the victor, acclaimed trainer Lees for top preparation.

“Kris is a champion. He’s such a good trainer. He knows how to ‘prep’ these horses up,” McDonald said.

“He told me a couple of weeks ago, ‘you want to be riding this horse’. He’s in career-best form, and he felt enormous today.”

Lees’ past winners: Spangler (2023), Kinloch (2022), Cristal Breeze (2021), Serene Miss (2018), Danish Twist 2016.
