Krispyn dreams of G2 Karrakatta Plate success

Following a fortuitous change of heart, Joshua Krispyn plans to raise the stakes and plot a path to next month’s Group 2 Karrakatta Plate (1200m) at Ascot with Sir Dreamalot.

Perth’s richest juvenile race was off the radar and an idea far removed for Joshua Krispyn until Sir Dreamalot raced into calculations by winning his maiden in great style at Bunbury on Saturday.

Ridden by Brad Parnham, Sir Dreamalot settled leaders back and after presenting on straightening the son of A Lot exploded clear to record an impressive win in sharp time.

Starting at double figure odds, Sir Dreamalot’s dominant 4 ½ length victory over favourite and last-start winner Blue Rocket gave Krispyn double reason to celebrate,

It was Krispyn’s first Saturday success as a trainer and celebrating the milestone on his home track was a moment he savoured with close friends and supporters.

Punters reacted quickly to Sir Dreamalot’s emphatic first win, backing the gelding from $30 into $9 for the Karrakatta Plate on April 20.

Krispyn is unsure if Sir Dreamalot can reach and win the Karrakatta Plate, but as a young trainer striving to make his mark in racing, he’s excited to have a horse in contention.

“I was going to tip him out after his second start,” Krispyn told The Races WA.

“But, he’s always shown ability and been working with some good horses and holding his own.

“I haven’t been able to see it on the track because he hasn’t had the luck.

“He ran the quickest last 600m of the entire meeting on Saturday.

“The times don’t lie and it’s a good effort for a horse having its third start.

“Brad (Parnham) stood up on him before the line.

“I can’t believe how well he’s pulled up; he’ll probably go to the Supremacy.

“He has to have an easy week and then build into it next week.

“If he does well in the Supremacy and can measure up, you have to think about the Karrakatta.

“Someone has backed him so they must think I’m going there.

“He was about $30 on Saturday and a week before that a 150 to 1.”

Krispyn has a small team in work, juggling training his own horses as stable foreman for Stephen Miller, a relative newcomer to the position.

Miller, who’s won a host of feature races as a jockey and now as a trainer, has carved out a reputation as one of the state’s most astute horseman.

Krispyn, from a non-racing background, said if it were not for Miller’s influence and guidance, he would be lost to the racing game.

“It’s been a blessing in disguise in him asking me to work for him,” Krispyn said.

“I was ready to pull the pin.

“For us small trainers in WA it’s ridiculously hard to get a start unless you’re working for someone.

“We don’t have any on-course stabling and rent is ridiculous at the moment.

“So, the smaller blokes who want to make a career out of it we have to work for the bigger trainers.

“It’s taken a while to get a Saturday winner, but I’ve had to do it the hard way.”

Sold for $30,000 in a private sale, Sir Dreamalot has given back to owners $89,1000 in earnings and bonuses.

Tabtouch has Golden Kathleen, a brilliant winner at her only start, the current $8 Karrakatta Plate favourite.

Sir Dreamalot, Earthstorm, Diamond Dancer and Bustling are on the next line at $9.
