Lady Chant to her credentials in the Australasian Oaks

Lady Chant gave trainer Brock Lewthwaite his biggest thrill in racing and he is hoping the good times can continue when the filly embarks on the first leg of an interstate treble on Saturday.

The staying prospect proved she was the best of the girls with an upset victory in the WA Oaks (2400m) and was far from uncompetitive when fifth in the WA Derby (2400m) two weeks later.

Lewthwaite planned on spelling Lady Chant but had a change of heart and opted to test her credentials in Adelaide, kicking off in the G1 Australasian Oaks (2000m) at Morphettville.

“She worked this morning (Tuesday) and went really, really good,”Lewthwaite told The Races WA.

“She was quite impressive and I will probably take her to the beach for the rest of the week.

“She has settled in ridiculously well and where she is staying at Strathalbyn is very similar to home.

“She has settled in far, far better than expectations.”

Lewthwaite is under no illusion of the task facing Lady Chant against well credentialed opponents, but he is confident she can make a solid contribution.

In an open betting affair Tabtouch have Lady Chant rated a $26 chance.

Peter and Paul Snowden’s in-form Frankel filly My Whisper, chasing five consecutive wins, is the $5 market leader.

Australian Oaks (2400m) champion El Patroness is next at $6, Daisies $7, Douceur and Mamounia $8, Glint Of Hope $8.50 and Mac N Cheese $9.

“I think she may be vulnerable going back in distance, but the bigger track could counteract that,” Lewthwaite said.

“And the blinkers going on could really improve her a little bit.

“I just can’t believe how well she has settled in and eating.

“Her weight is the same as when we left home.

“I’m pretty rapt with where she is at.”

New Zealand-born Lewthwaite, a self-described racing tragic, says he’s thrilled and pinching himself to be going up against some of the big names in Australian racing on the weekend.

“I’m staying with David Jolly at Strathalbyn and I’m learning so much,” Lewthwaite said.

“I’m picking his brains about everything and he doesn’t mind sharing any information.

“He’s been a great help and I’m in a really good place.

“The hospitality has been amazing.”

A $180,000 Magic Millions Perth yearling in 2020, Lewthwaite says he hopes Lady Chant can extend her stay in Adelaide beyond the Australasian Oaks.

“I’d love to hang around for a couple of races,” Lewthwaite said.

“If she can be competitive she can go onto the South Australian Derby (2500m) and we have found another race two weeks after

“It’s the old SA Oaks, a filly’s classic over 2500m, the same as the Derby.

“I don’t want to turn around and come home after Saturday.”

Glyn Schofield will partner Lady Chant in her interstate debut.
