Lady Shenandoah spot on to upset Ka Ying Rising in The Everest

Few people understand Hong Kong racing like Darren Beadman, and the former champion jockey believes Ka Ying Rising faces a genuine test adapting to Randwick’s different surface ahead of The Everest (1200m).

All 16 of Ka Ying Rising’s starts have been at Sha Tin, and his recent trial defeat sparked debate about how he’ll handle Randwick. Having ridden in Hong Kong for four seasons, Beadman said the differences between the tracks are subtle but significant.

“Randwick has a sandier profile than Rosehill, and Sha Tin does too, though not as much as Happy Valley,” Beadman said. “It’s more undulating as well. Sha Tin’s like a billiard table — Randwick isn’t. But good horses adapt to anything.”

Now part of Chris Waller’s stable, Beadman is overseeing the preparation of three Everest contenders: Lady Shenandoah, Joliestar and Angel Capital. “Everyone’s got an opinion on Ka Ying Rising’s trial, but I just know our three are flying,” he said.

Lady Shenandoah had an easy gallop at Rosehill over 1000m in 1:06.84, with her final 600m clocked in 36.83 seconds. “She’s spot-on,” Beadman said. “She’s doing better now than before she went down to Melbourne.”

Lady Shenandoah was fourth in the Manikato Stakes last start but appears to have come through it well. Kerrin McEvoy partnered her in Saturday’s gallop but will ride Jedibeel in The Everest, with James McDonald, Damian Lane and Ben Melham to take the remaining Waller rides.
