Emily Lang has already made waves in Brisbane’s jockeys’ premiership, and she’ll have another opportunity to impress when she partners Boomtown Boss in the Group 2 Queensland Guineas at Eagle Farm this Saturday.
Lang has tallied 52 metropolitan wins this season, many with Tony Gollan, who leads her riding commitments. She currently holds a comfortable lead over Angela Jones, while James Orman remains sidelined due to his stint in Hong Kong.
With a data science and engineering background, Lang’s transition to professional riding is unique—but Gollan is confident she’s earned her place among Queensland’s best, especially aboard a promising type like Boomtown Boss.
As carnival time ramps up, Lang admits the competition for rides becomes more intense, but she maintains her focus. Gollan, meanwhile, believes they’re in with a big chance.
“He is still doing things wrong in running and still presenting in the wrong part of the track but I think if we can improve that little more again, and there’s no doubt that he loves the big track at Eagle Farm, I don’t think there’s any risk that he won’t run a mile,” Gollan said.
Boomtown Boss is unbeaten this campaign and enters the Guineas off a convincing win in the Listed Daybreak Lover Stakes (1400m) two weeks ago.
“I love the horse and rider combination with Emily,” Gollan said. “She knows the horse so well and I lose nothing by having her on. We go into the race well prepared.”
Bookmakers have Boomtown Boss marked as an $8 contender, while Churchill’s Choice is the $6 co-favourite alongside Depth Of Character and Shangri La Spring, both trimmed from $11.
“With a few southerners coming up, we get pushed down the chain a bit, but he is a very progressive horse and we are happy with him,” Gollan concluded.
