BRC Sprint and Stradbroke Handicap aims for War Machine

Lindsay Park looks set to be a key player during the Queensland Winter Carnival after a dominant display at Caulfield on Saturday, with three stable runners saluting across the program.

The Ben, Will and JD Hayes trio scored with Angry Skies, promising filly Madiyya, and emerging gelding War Machine—two of whom now appear headed for bigger races up north.

War Machine, who recently joined the stable from Mike Moroney and Glen Thompson, booked a likely trip to Brisbane with a dominant 1400m victory, a result that puts him on a path to the BRC Sprint and potentially the Stradbroke Handicap in June.

“We’re just so fortunate to be given this horse to train and he’s been a pleasure,” Ben Hayes said.

“He’s been in the system nearly two weeks now and arrived to us in good condition.

“He’s an exciting horse heading up to Queensland now, we’ll look to run in the BRC Sprint in two weeks’ time and hopefully he can get qualified to run in the Stradbroke.”

Starting a $1.90 betting favourite, War Machine was given a textbook ride by Jamie Mott and finished 1-1/4 lengths clear of Jimmy The Bear ($26), with Oscar’s Fortune ($14) finishing third.

Madiyya, meanwhile, continued her progression with back-to-back wins after taking out a 1400m benchmark 70 for fillies under Luke Currie. The daughter of Super Seth impressed again and could earn a shot at black-type company in Queensland.

“There’s a race called the Fred Best (Classic), which is 1400, then a couple of weeks later there’s a mile, but she’s talented and the first thing we’re going to be guided by is how she pulls up,” Will Hayes said.

The filly, a half-sister to Group 1 winner Grunt and Group 2 winner Zayydani, is another who carries the Trelawney Stud colours with pride.

In the day’s surprise result, Angry Skies made it two wins in a row with a gritty win in the 1600m benchmark 84, scoring at $41 after claiming the Warracknabeal Cup last start.
