Linebacker has delivered a career-defining victory in the Group 1 Randwick Guineas, outpacing the heavily favoured Broadsiding to give trainer Tom Charlton his first Group 1 win.
Charlton’s tactical shift, putting Linebacker in a position to make Broadsiding and Swiftfalcon chase him down, paid off. Linebacker won by a neck, with Swiftfalcon finishing third.
Trainer Charlton was overjoyed, calling the win “unbelievable,” and reflecting on the colt’s earlier promise. “He’s always been a very talented horse,” said Charlton.
Jockey Zac Lloyd executed a flawless ride, following a pre-race strategy to ensure Broadsiding and Swiftfalcon were uncomfortable. “When the gap came, she made light work of it,” Lane commented on Linebacker’s turn of foot.
The victory continues the success of Waller’s team and solidifies Linebacker’s place as a top contender for future races.
