Luther to lead Fellowes back to Australia for The Golden Eagle

British trainer Charlie Fellowes is preparing for a return to Australia after identifying promising colt Luther as a worthy traveller for this year’s spring carnival.

Fellowes, who made his name Down Under with crowd-favourite Prince Of Arran, will target Sydney this time with Luther emerging as a likely candidate for the $10 million Golden Eagle at Rosehill on November 1.

“I’ve been eager to find another globetrotter and I think Luther might be the right horse,” Fellowes said. “Horses like this are huge earners — Prince Of Arran banked over £2.3 million during his time in Australia.”

“The Golden Eagle is a logical option. It’s a valuable race and the 1500 metres suits him perfectly. He’s a versatile, fast horse who I think will relish the Australian conditions.”

Luther was elevated to first in last weekend’s Hall of Fame Stakes at Saratoga after suffering interference from Zulu Kingdom, who was relegated in the stewards’ room. That marked his third win from nine starts and followed a top-three finish in the Belmont Derby.

While Fellowes hasn’t ruled out a tilt at the Breeders’ Cup at Del Mar, he indicated that an Australian campaign was more likely.

“At this stage, Sydney seems the better fit. He’s a quick, progressive horse, and the trip over makes sense,” he added.

Fellowes’ last Aussie runner was Prince Of Arran in the 2020 Melbourne Cup, where he finished third, following earlier wins in the Geelong Cup and Hotham Handicap, along with placings in the Caulfield Cup and Herbert Power.

Meanwhile, fellow UK trainer William Haggas is also headed to Sydney with his stayer Sam Hawkens, who won at Goodwood on the weekend.

Haggas is aiming the Galileo gelding at the Group 3 ATC St Leger Stakes (2600m) on October 18 and confirmed travel arrangements were in place.

“We’ve locked in quarantine for September 5, so the plan is very much to travel,” Haggas said of the four-time winner from 11 starts.
