Magic Millions races abandoned due to weather

Persistent heavy rain has claimed the last seven races on the Magic Millions Day card with the remainder of the program to be run under lights at Gold Coast on Friday night.

After the jockeys gave their approval to race on the newly laid section at the 500-metres mark on Thursday, the forecast rain was to be the main enemy for the meeting going ahead in the lead-up and on the day.

This means that the $3 million Magic Millions 2yo Classic (1200m) and the $3 million Magic Millions 3yo Guineas (1400m) will both be run on the postponed card on a seven-race program.

Surface water from a storm that hit the course after the third race, the Magic Millions The Debut (1000m) won by the Liam Birchley-trained juvenile Amosu ($4.80), delayed the races by more than an hour before a decision was made to attempt to continue the meeting after further track inspections.

Stewards noted the co-operation of the jockeys throughout the day.

“The Star Gold Coast Magic Millions Raceday is an iconic national event, and will shine brightest on the national stage under lights on Friday,” Racing Queensland CEO Jason Scott said. “The safety of our animals and participants is paramount, and unfortunately a heavy downpour following the third race has left the track unsuitable for racing.”

Race times and further details are still to be released.
