Trained out of Victoria, Magic Time has earned pseudo-Sydney resident status through her numerous forays into Australia’s biggest racing hub.
Of her 26 races to date, 14 have been Sydney-based for four wins alongside five places, dwarfing her 10 Victorian efforts and Brisbane duo.
Saturday sees her in year four of appearing on the Sydney autumn carnival finale – third in 2023’s James H B Carr Stakes (1400m), victorious in the All Aged Stakes (1400m) next up, then midfield the following edition.
She’s thrived at this meeting typically, leaving trainer Grahame Begg positive despite the premium competition in the Group 1 All Aged Stakes over Randwick’s track.
“It’s obviously a good race. They don’t give them away,” Begg said.
“This has been her preferred distance.
“She looks in great order, and she worked strongly (on Tuesday) morning at Randwick.”
Less than three lengths adrift first-up at Caulfield’s William Reid Stakes (1200m) March 21, she pressed too hard initially and tired right at the end unplaced to Joliestar in the TJ Smith Stakes (1200m).
According to Begg, mitigating circumstances applied, prompting the blinkers’ removal.
“The other day, she ended up being stuck down on the inside of runners. She got a bit of a bump at the start, and she over-raced in the blinkers and fired up,” Begg said.
“It took a good four hundred metres to get back and get cover, but then she was back down hemmed in on the inside and probably on the worst part of the track after doing a bit of work.
“She only got beaten a touch over three lengths. We felt she ran well, so we’ve taken the blinkers off her and we’ll see what happens.”
Clash of All Aged Stakes’ prior winners looms with 2023 conqueror Giga Kick and reigning victor Jimmysstar accepted.
Wide posts challenge Magic Time (11) and Jimmysstar (12), Giga Kick faring better from seven.
Fangirl, a crowd pleaser, re-enters after spring-ending bone chip procedure.
