Sydney’s racing rhythm has tripped up plenty of Victorian challengers over the Murray, but Ciaron Maher trusts his champion colt Observer will conquer it.

The colt boasting dual Group 1 strikes prepares for his Sydney premiere in Saturday’s $1 million Rosehill Guineas (2000m).

Post his February 28 Australian Guineas at Flemington, the Ghaiyyath progeny ventured north for clockwise preparation, which has Maher highly satisfied.

“I wanted to get him up there early and do a couple of nice little pieces of work and he worked like a horse that has had a lot of experience up there,” Maher said from Caulfield on Tuesday morning.

“He came through his Guineas win very well. He’s travelled up, he did a nice piece of work last week that was quite impressive and this morning just cantered around on the bit.

He didn’t have to do a lot and you would think he’s only going to improve getting back up to 10 furlongs (2000m).”

With Godolphin colours, Observer—who had right-handed sessions with James Cummings before Maher took over last year—seeks to pioneer as an Australian Guineas winner landing the Rosehill Guineas.

His fellow Group 1 from the Victoria Derby puts him in line with Dulcify, Helenus, Tarzino and Riff Rocket for Rosehill Guineas glory.

Maher flirted with nominating for the older horses’ Australian Cup (2000m) in a fortnight, but prioritized the same-distance Group 1 with age rivals.

“He’s still got options (to take on older horses), but taking on three-year-olds at 2000 metres, it’s hard not to go there and his form this prep has been spot on,” Maher said.

“Hopefully he can add another one to his CV and add to his record.”

The Rosehill Guineas attracted nine runners, with Observer in barrier two beside Autumn Boy, locked in Wednesday with Craig Williams steering.
