Ciaron Maher’s yard is assessing paths forward for Light Infantry Man before his turn at Caulfield.
The favoured assignment for Light Infantry Man is Saturday’s Group 2 Peter Young Stakes (1800m), coming off a 1600m success at Caulfield last month.
That Saturday appearance positions Light Infantry Man for either the Group 1 Australian Cup (2000m) at Flemington or Group 1 Tancred Stakes (2400m) in Rosehill.
Set for March 28, those races follow Light Infantry Man’s Australian Cup conquest from last year.
Maher had eyed last weekend’s Group 1 All-Star Mile (1600m) at Flemington as a starter for Light Infantry Man.
This French stayer flourishes amid firm gallops, like in his Australian Cup win last season.
“He is one horse that does enjoy (Pride Of) Jenni’s speed,” Maher said.
“In the Australian Cup when she was ripping along, he was one of the few horses that had a smile on his face during the run.
“(Ethan) Brownie (Brown) put him into the race off a hot speed, so you know he loves a true gallop and the 1800 metres at this stage of his preparation should suit him.
“After Saturday we’re looking at the Tancred Stakes potentially with him. The 2400 metres at weight-for-age looks like it will suit him.”
The Maher squad plans to include Berkshire Breeze in the Peter Young Stakes; sidelined since a poor showing in the Sandown Classic (2400m) last November.
Berkshire Breeze gears up for the April Mornington Cup (2400m), securing ballot-free access to October’s Caulfield Cup (2400m).
Chris Waller’s Buckaroo and Birdman are tipped to line up with Light Infantry Man and Berkshire Breeze for the Peter Young Stakes.
Mucus was found in Buckaroo during pre-race scoping Saturday, leading to his withdrawal from Flemington’s All-Star Mile.
Waller mentioned the gelding’s schedule included Saturday’s Peter Young Stakes leading to the Australian Cup.
Both Waller charges are due at Caulfield on Tuesday to gallop.
Further Peter Young Stakes hopefuls are Apulia, Astral Flame, Banker’s Choice, Chief Little Rock, Gregolimo and Whisky On The Hill.
