Lindsay Park’s Makram will line up in the Anniversary Vase (1600m) at Caulfield this Saturday, once again stepping out as a value runner after catching the eye when resuming at Cranbourne.
The gelding has pulled off big upsets before—most notably at $151 in a Stakes race at Flemington last year—and Ben Hayes believes he’s building toward another big run after placing third over 1400m on April 18.
“We’ve reapplied the blinkers and expect a solidly run race,” Hayes said. “He’ll be allowed to settle and we’ll look for him to charge late. He’s definitely a top-three hope.”
Makram began his career in the UK before transferring to Australia as a staying prospect. He ran well in his first few campaigns, including placings in the Herbert Power Stakes and Geelong Cup in 2022.
Though lightly raced since, the gelding has been managed carefully following joint surgery. Hayes says the signs this time around have been positive.
“His joints have really settled and he’s looking as good as ever,” Hayes said. “He’s one of those horses who can produce a run out of nowhere when things fall his way.”
Early markets have Pride Of Jenni favourite at $2.40, followed by Regal Zeus ($4.80) and Hellsing ($7), while Makram sits on the next line at $26.
