The way for Godolphin filly Mamounia to improve her broodmare value is to score a Group 1 win, and the way James Cummings sees that is with a distance drop in Adelaide.

The Group 1 Australasian Oaks (2000m) is next on the agenda for Mamounia after the filly scored an important stakes win at her most recent outing.

In defeating The Cunning Fox in the Listed Galilee Series Final (2400m) at Caulfield on April 16, Mamounia secured ‘black type’ for her breeding page as a future broodmare, but a Group 1 win would look even better.

Cummings and Godolphin had the option to take a rise in trip in the Listed VRC St Leger (2800m) at Flemington last Monday, but they had that base covered with Alegron taking out the staying contest.

Despite drawing the outside barrier, Cummings is looking forward to Saturday’s contest in which Mamounia will be ridden by Damien Oliver.

Cummings could not be happier with the filly’s condition ahead of Saturday’s race.

“She’s airborne I think,” Cummings said.

“She pulled up great from her last start win.

“We resisted the temptation of running her in the St Leger as I thought we had that covered and we should be concentrating on the Oaks with her.

“It was good to see The Cunning Fox run well in the St Leger and we recognised that he was the horse to beat in the Galilee Series Final.”

Godolphin and Cummings are yet to win the Australasian Oaks and Mamounia has been easy in the market since Tuesday’s barrier draw, drifting from $9.50 to $14 with TAB.

Group 3 Auraria Stakes winner My Whisper heads the market at $5 ahead of El Patroness ($6).
