Matthew Brown looking to overcome odds in the Caulfield Guineas

The Matthew Brown-trained Prix De Turn will break new ground if successful in the Caulfield Guineas.

Outsiders are not uncommon, think Mighty Boss ($101) and Abaridy ($251), while Prix De Turn is currently a $34 chance with TAB for Saturday’s Group 1 Caulfield Guineas contest for three-year-olds.

Prix De Turn will become the least experienced horse in the past 22 years if successful, by a long way.

The son of Turn Me Loose has raced once, finishing second at Sandown over 1400m on September 25.

The least experienced of the previous 22 Caulfield Guineas winners were God’s Own (2005) and Weekend Hussler (2007) who each won at their fifth race starts.

The most experienced was Show A Heart (2000) who won at his 12th start while three-year-olds winning the Caulfield Guineas at their sixth start hold the highest number, at six.

Brown said it was not by choice that Prix De Turn had a delayed start to his career saying the preferred option would have been to start his career off in a maiden before heading to town.

“We brought him as a breeze-up horse, and we thought he was above average,” Brown told RSN.

“The plan was to get him ready to have a crack at the Caulfield Guineas, but it wasn’t meant to be at his second start by any means.

“He just had a little set-back early in the prep and we cost ourselves a couple of weeks.”

Brown is under no illusion at how difficult the task is confronting Prix De Turn but will be happy if he is competitive and is not shying away from the contest.

He does not know what heights Prix De Turn can reach but is confident the three-year-old will leave it all on the track on Saturday.

“If he doesn’t measure up on Saturday, we can lower our sights and have a crack at the Sandown Guineas, or something,” Brown said.

“But we’ll get Saturday out of the way and worry about it then.”

Prix De Turn will be Browns second Guineas runner having finished seventh with Mr Exclusive in 2018.
