Ballarat trainers Tony and Calvin McEvoy are hopeful that Bossy Nic’s proficiency on straight tracks will work in her favor as she returns to Flemington.
Coming off a recent Flemington victory, Bossy Nic is set to take on the VOBIS Gold Comet (1000m) this Saturday.
This race, limited to VOBIS Gold-qualified horses, features a field of nine competitors.
With a total prize purse of $175,000—$96,250 of which goes to the winner—there’s also an additional $23,000 owner’s bonus for eligible horses.
“We’re going after the VOBIS prize money. She’s in excellent condition and really enjoys the straight,” said Tony McEvoy.
Bossy Nic has maintained solid form this campaign, beginning her season at Ballarat in December. Saturday’s contest will be her sixth run in this preparation.
After finishing third at Flemington on January 18, the McEvoy duo entered her in Group 3 company at Sandown, where she finished tenth behind Oakleigh Plate runner-up She’s Bulletproof on February 1.
Returning to a lower grade, Bossy Nic claimed an emphatic 1200m win at Flemington on February 15.
McEvoy admitted that the drop to 1000m adds some uncertainty, but the significant prize money made it an opportunity worth pursuing.
“Coming back to 1000 metres is a slight risk, but this is a restricted VOBIS race, so the competition shouldn’t be overwhelming,” McEvoy said.
“We’ve kept her fresh with some dressage and swimming. She’s primed and ready.”
Beau Mertens, who guided Bossy Nic to victory last time out, retains the ride on Saturday.
