Medical clearance needed for Schiller after tumble at Kembla Grange

Tyler Schiller has to get medical clearance to honor his bookings at Wagga and Hawkesbury this week in the wake of a fall at Kembla Grange during racing.

Schiller handled the reins on Winters Kiss, prepared by Hawkes Racing, in the second race Wednesday; the mare was at the front alongside rivals and primed for the finish before stumbling near the 200-metre mark.

When he moved to retire her, the jockey was cast off and impacted the ground severely.

He was up in no time, yet stood down from remaining rides to err on the side of caution.

Not in attendance at Kembla, Racing NSW chief steward Tom Moxon conferred with track stewards and affirmed no serious harm to Schiller, though medical clearance is mandatory before he mounts up again.

“It was a heavy fall, and his head did make significant contact with the ground,” Moxon said.

“He was assessed by the ambulance officers, and he was cleared of any injury, including concussion. He wasn’t showing any signs of concussion.

“But he will need to provide a medical clearance before he can ride again.”

At ninth in the Sydney jockeys’ standings, Schiller eyes one ride Thursday at Wyong and eight Friday at Wagga Cup day, with Bianco Vilano pegged for the headline race.

On Saturday at Hawkesbury’s standalone fixture, he claims nine of 10 races, notably Captain Furai for Chris Waller in the Gold Cup (1600m) and the stable’s Burma Star in the Hawkesbury Guineas (1400m).
