Melbourne Cup winner Without A Fight retired

Without A Fight, the celebrated winner of the 2023 Melbourne and Caulfield Cups, has been retired just as he was preparing for another campaign in Brisbane.

The Freedman-trained gelding completed a trial at Caulfield Heath on Thursday, but connections promptly made the call to retire the seven-year-old, ending his impressive career on a high note.

His memorable victories in the Caulfield Cup and Melbourne Cup placed him among the elite stayers in Australian racing history. Anthony and Sam Freedman described training him as one of the greatest honours of their careers.

Beginning his journey with Simon and Ed Crisford in the UK, Without A Fight first ventured to Australia for the 2022 Melbourne Cup, where he finished 13th.

He remained in Australia, picking up Group wins in the Lord Mayor’s Cup and the Q22 at Eagle Farm the following year, setting the stage for his historic spring campaign.

An injury sidelined him for much of 2024, but he returned to run third in the Group 1 Champions Stakes and later contested the Hong Kong Vase, finishing well back in what would be his final start.

The gelding was preparing for a potential run in the Group 1 Doomben Cup (2000m) before the decision was made to retire him.

“He has been an absolute gentleman to have in the stable and will be remembered as one of the finest stayers of his generation,” the Freedmans said in a statement.

“His Cups double not only delivered the pinnacle of our training careers but also created unforgettable memories for all involved – from our dedicated track riders, stable hands, vets, farriers, to those at the spelling farms.

“He has left a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to be a part of his journey.

“We extend our heartfelt thanks to his owner, Sheikh Mohammed Obaid Al Maktoum, for entrusting us with the privilege of training such a remarkable horse in Australia. We are truly indebted to him for the opportunity.

“As Without A Fight begins the next chapter of his life, we wish him the very best in his retirement.

“He has given us all so much – and for that, we are forever grateful.”

He retires with 11 wins from 24 starts and prize money in excess of $9.7 million.
