Moana Spirit has stamped herself as one of the more exciting juvenile prospects in Victoria after maintaining her unbeaten record in the Geelong Diamond (1100m).
The Tony and Calvin McEvoy-trained filly proved she could handle a rise in class, backing up her Morphettville debut win with a strong, decisive performance at Geelong.
Calvin McEvoy said the Tagaloa filly has made noticeable progress since her first race start.
“She’s a beautiful, laid-back filly and very unassuming,” McEvoy said.
“She was quite raw in her work going towards Adelaide and we didn’t expect a huge amount. She went over there, she won, and since she returned to Flemington, we noticed that she’d really switched on and I thought her jump-out in between was fantastic.”
Jockey Luke Currie said the filly’s development has been rapid.
“She’s improved a lot,” Currie said.
“Today she was really dynamic. She jumped well as she always has and there was solid pressure from both sides. I was able to come back, get onto the favourite’s back, and she was really sharp when I asked her.”
Moana Spirit surged clear late to defeat Ghana’s Akan by two lengths, with Fine Sierra finishing strongly for third.
The Yulong Investments homebred now shapes as a potential contender for the Group 3 Blue Diamond Preview (1000m), with the Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m) firmly on the radar.
“Everything about her tells us that she’s going to be better at three, but she’s two from two,” McEvoy added.
