Tony and Calvin McEvoy are relying on softer turf to play to Bossy Nic’s strengths at Morphettville.
The mare targets another black-type win in Saturday’s Group 3 Proud Miss Stakes (1200m).
The duo contemplated the Group 1 The Goodwood (1200m) at the same venue but selected the fillies and mares race as more suitable for Bossy Nic.
Bossy Nic captured the Group 3 Thoroughbred Breeders Stakes (1200m) at Flemington in just her second career start as a two-year-old, raising hopes for a Sydney Autumn Carnival campaign.
Form has eluded her since, however, with four wins in 29 outings and earnings approaching $740,000, and she has not won another Stakes race.
A third in the Group 2 Tristarc Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield last spring stands out.
Her two runs back this time, both on sloppy ground, yielded placings: second at Flemington on resumption, third at Caulfield on April 11.
Calvin McEvoy welcomes the soft rating predicted for Morphettville on Saturday.
“She wants cut in the ground,” McEvoy said.
“She’s a nice mare, she’s going well and is a capable mare on her day and as soon as she gets some soft ground, she improves, which is what she’s had two runs this time in.”
Bossy Nic is third pick in betting for the event, behind favourite Aviatress at $4.20 and Naifah at $4.40.
Daniel Stackhouse will be in the saddle on Saturday, taking over from apprentice Jackson Radley who rode her last two times this preparation.
