Morton holds firm with his 2023 Perth Cup decision

Trainer Dan Morton has secured the services of Victorian jockey Patrick Moloney to partner Alaskan God in the re-run of the TABtouch-Perth Cup (2400m) on January 14.

The Ascot-based trainer booked Patrick Moloney to partner the reigning WA Derby winner for the Group 2 event last week, with regular jockey Chris Parnham engaged to ride stablemate Stafford’s Lad.

Morton said he was happy to keep the jockey arrangements the same for Saturday week’s re-run and both riders were happy with how their mounts felt on Sunday.

“I must admit I didn’t give it a lot of thought on Sunday to what I was going to do with everything that was going on,” he told The Races WA.

“I spoke to Patrick’s manager, and he said he was keen to come back over for it.

“Patrick said to me after the race was called off ‘if it’s any consolation he felt really good’.

“Chris said the same to me about Stafford’s Lad.

“They’re both at a good level of fitness and now the challenge is to maintain that over the next 10 days.”

While Morton will have to wait and see if one of his stayers can win the Perth Cup, his wait to get blacktype on sprinter Wilchino ended on Sunday.

The mare finished a gallant second behind How’s The Serenity in the Summer Scorcher (1000m) and Morton said she would go to the Miss Andretti Stakes (1100m) on January 14.

“We had to get her up off the canvas after those gut busters from wide barriers early in the prep,” he said.

“We thought we were trying to get her to the Winterbottom and when that happens with mares, they can go the other way.

“A low draw will be important, and she will strip fitter after the run on Sunday.”

Meanwhile, Morton said Group 1 placegetters Kissonallforcheeks and Startrade would be back in the stable later this month and indicated he was keen to get both horses to The Quokka (1200m) on April 15.
