A first-up shot at the Group 1 Newmarket Handicap is being considered for Joliestar as connections aim to maximize her stellar fresh form.
The Chris Waller-trained mare signaled her readiness for a strong autumn campaign with an eye-catching barrier trial victory at Rosehill on Thursday. She finished strongly in the 900m heat, edging out Panic by a short neck, with stablemate Lindermann another half-length back in third.
With three wins from four first-up starts, Joliestar’s fresh record has been a key factor in planning her autumn campaign, according to Waller’s assistant trainer, Charlie Duckworth.
“We obviously know she goes so well first-up, so we are focused on that and taking advantage of her first-up record,” Duckworth said.
“She has come back really well. We are focusing on getting her to switch off and relax.”
The Newmarket Handicap (1200m) at Flemington on March 8 is one of the races under consideration for Joliestar’s seasonal debut.
“She could potentially go that way, but she would have to trial and go to a jump out up the straight if she is to go that way,” Duckworth added.
Meanwhile, Godolphin colt Traffic Warden, who finished second in the Golden Rose, also impressed at Thursday’s barrier trial session. Under the guidance of Zac Lloyd, Traffic Warden cruised on the bridle, finishing a promising third behind Shezanalister in his 900m heat.
