Magic Millions Guineas favourite Ninja will get his chance to test himself against stakes-class opposition when he lines up at Eagle Farm on Saturday.
The gelded Farnan colt is set to contest the Group 3 Vo Rogue Plate (1300m), a race trainer Michael Freedman has earmarked as an important stepping stone towards the Gold Coast feature.
Despite having only four career starts, Ninja currently heads betting for the Magic Millions 3YO Guineas, and Freedman believes the colt is right where he needs to be.
“He’s great, he had a jumpout midweek last week at the Gold Coast just to keep his fitness up,” Freedman said.
“I’d always planned for him to go into Magic Millions Guineas third-up.
“Knowing that he was going to be four weeks between, that’s why he had the 1000-metre jumpout last week, just to keep him up to the mark.”
Ninja resumed with a strong third in the Pierata Plate over 1200m at Doomben on December 6, finishing just half-a-length from winner Grafterburners in a tight finish.
Tommy Berry takes over riding duties this weekend, with Ninja to jump from barrier 12 in a field of 14 — a draw that Freedman admits presents a challenge.
“He’s drawn a bit awkwardly out in gate 12, that’s a little bit of a concern and something he’s going to have to try and overcome, but the horse himself is in great form,” Freedman said.
How Ninja handles the Vo Rogue Plate will go a long way to confirming his Guineas credentials, with markets and form guides available via trusted online bookmakers.
