The sister to Orchestral, who set a New Zealand sale-ring record earlier this week, is headed to Australia after being purchased by Chris Waller and Guy Mulcaster.
The powerhouse duo secured the Savabeel x Symphonic filly for NZ$2.4 million on behalf of one of Waller’s existing clients. This price set a new benchmark for a yearling filly in New Zealand, breaking the previous record of $1.6 million paid last year for Prowess’s sister, purchased by Peter Moody.
Mulcaster acknowledged that the price exceeded their expectations but understood why the filly was highly sought after, particularly after Orchestral’s impressive victory in the Aotearoa Classic during the Karaka Millions meeting.
“She’s a beautiful filly, and having her sister win on Saturday night certainly helped,” Mulcaster said. “We’re fortunate to have a fantastic client supporting us. While we went a bit further than we initially planned, that’s the nature of auctions. We’re thrilled to have her and will give her time before taking her back to Australia to see what she can achieve.”
The filly, prepared by Haunui Farm, is the third living foal from Symphonic, a daughter of O’Reilly. Symphonic boasts an illustrious pedigree, being a sister to the dam of NZ 2000 Guineas winner and Australian Guineas favorite Savaglee, as well as a three-quarter sister to the dam of ATC Oaks winner Daffodil.
Symphonic’s first foal, by Reliable Man, tragically died after birth, leaving Orchestral as her first successful progeny. Orchestral has significantly boosted the family’s reputation with seven wins from 15 starts, including Group 1 triumphs in the New Zealand Derby and Sydney’s Vinery Stud Stakes.
Although Symphonic missed to Savabeel after Orchestral, she has been consistently bred back to the renowned stallion. In 2022, her Savabeel colt sold for NZ$310,000 at Karaka, and in October 2023, she delivered another filly by the legendary sire.
