Doncaster Mile heroine Stefi Magnetica is still two weeks from resuming, but her stable companion Pericles is ready to launch his spring campaign in the Group 2 Tramway Stakes.
Pericles was transferred to Bjorn Baker this season after Godolphin switched to a public training model, and Baker described the four-time Group 1 placegetter as the most accomplished horse to enter his care. “I’m very lucky to get a horse like him. He is the best credentialled horse I have received as a readymade racehorse and it’s exciting from that point of view,” Baker said.
Winner of the Tramway Stakes in 2023, Pericles has not raced since running fifth to Stefi Magnetica in the Doncaster earlier this year. The pair tuned up with a 1000m exhibition gallop at Randwick on Wednesday, where Pericles led under Josh Parr and kept his stablemate at bay by a length.
Stefi Magnetica will resume in the Group 2 Theo Marks Stakes (1300m) at Rosehill on September 13 before targeting the Group 1 King Charles III Stakes (1600m). Baker has also left the door open for a quick back-up into the Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m), much like she did last spring when running in both the Golden Eagle (1500m) and Cantala Stakes (1600m) on consecutive weekends.
“She has backed up well before, so it’s not out of the question,” Baker noted.
