The Anthony and Sam Freedman-trained Point Barrow underlined her emerging credentials with a brilliant late surge to win the Red Roses Stakes (1200m) at Flemington.

It continues a tremendous run for the stable, who celebrated Group 1 success when Tentyris captured the Coolmore Stud Stakes last weekend. Tentyris now moves on to the VRC Champions Sprint (1200m) on Saturday.

Ridden quietly by Daniel Stackhouse, Point Barrow powered home from the rear to defeat stablemate Inkaruna by 1¼ lengths, with Miss Freelove in third.

Fourth-placed Akaysha’s rider Jye McNeil launched a protest alleging interference, but stewards dismissed it after a short hearing.

Sam Freedman said Point Barrow is still raw but possesses elite speed.

“She has a big turn of foot, but she still hasn’t pieced it all together,” he said.

“She was too keen early. That’s why we kept her to this race instead of the Coolmore. Once she matures, she’ll be high-class.”

The win had added meaning due to the filly carrying the silks of Janice and the late Colin McKenna, breeders of Tuesday’s Melbourne Cup hero Half Yours.

“Col was a hugely respected figure. It’s special to share this moment with Janice,” Freedman said.

Point Barrow is expected to spell now, with the Robert Sangster Stakes flagged as a likely autumn aim.
