After arriving in Brisbane on Tuesday night, Pride Of Jenni was straight into her race week routine as she prepares for Saturday’s Group 1 Doomben Cup (2000m).
The classy mare settled in well after the flight, with assistant trainer Jack Turnbull confirming she had a light canter on the treadmill Wednesday morning to loosen up.
“She travelled up last night and travelled well,” Turnbull said. “She had a big drink, a canter on the treadmill this morning, then had a pick. It was all very light.”
The Ciaron Maher team has kept her fitness levels up since her recent Caulfield win, using a mix of treadmill work and a strong gallop under Craig Newitt to maintain her condition.
“She’s at a fitness level where it’s just about maintaining now,” Turnbull said. “She’s in great shape, we’ve been happy with her off the track and Craig was pleased with her feel in that gallop.”
All signs have been positive, including bloodwork taken upon arrival, and the team is hopeful she remains healthy heading into the weekend.
“Travel sickness can always be a concern, but she’s an older mare and has handled it well so far,” Turnbull noted.
Drawn ideally in barrier one, Pride Of Jenni looks well placed to take on a tough field, with conditions possibly playing to her favour if the rain arrives.
“She’s drawn perfectly and handles the wet if it comes. Her style suits Doomben and she’s ready to go,” Turnbull said.
