The trainer Phillip Stokes is optimistic about a repeat of his past winning ploy in the Robert Sangster Stakes delivering for Stretan Angel.

Sensibly, with bases in Pakenham and Morphettville, Stretan Angel might have readied for the Saturday Group 1 1200m fillies and mares race from Stokes’ Adelaide stable, following her third on resumption at Morphettville.

Stokes instead transported Stretan Angel to the mare’s Pakenham home turf for Robert Sangster Stakes preparations.

Two wins in the past five Robert Sangster Stakes adorn Stokes’ record, including similar handling of Climbing Star’s 2024 success.

En route to the Robert Sangster Stakes, Climbing Star raced twice in Adelaide before heading back to Pakenham every instance.

One run back from a spell marks Stretan Angel’s form, third behind Super Smink in the Group 3 RN Irwin Stakes (1100m) at Morphettville April 11.

Second in that race, Climbing Star progressed to win the Robert Sangster Stakes thereafter.

Aiming to sharpen Stretan Angel further, Stokes has enacted minor alterations.

“I thought her first-up run was OK, and we’ve gone put the blinkers back on her, but it’s a very tough race this year,” Stokes said.

“I bought her back after her first-up run.

“I did that with Climbing Star, but she can stay over after she has this one.

“She likes her home environment, so that’s why we did it.

“Her best is good enough and I think she’s going OK, but she’s getting sold after this run and The Goodwood.”

Last season’s Robert Sangster Stakes saw Stretan Angel ninth, followed by 11th in The Goodwood.

The 1200m Group 1 Goodwood awaits at Morphettville on May 9.
