The philosophy of restraint has proven ideal for trainers Anthony and Sam Freedman with the advancing three-year-old gelding Beskar, bringing rewards in his races.

He strung together a second straight victory by setting and holding the pace in Saturday’s Listed South Pacific Classic (1400m) at Randwick, fuelling thoughts of a Queensland winter carnival appearance.

Earlier, Beskar stunned in the Darby Munro Stakes (1200m), reviving his sharp edge after a flat spring showing.

“He’s become genuine, this horse,” Anthony Freedman said.

“He has always shown us really good ability. He just lost his way and needed gelding, and we’ve changed up a lot with him. We hardly work him, and it’s working for him.

“He can sustain a long gallop. It opens up some options for him at 1400 now.”

Damian Lane granted Beskar ($5.50) liberty to roll along, and he dug deep when challenged in the run home, repelling runner-up Mareth ($13) right on the line by a short head, despite the filly’s determined effort.

Regal Award ($1.90) claimed third, beaten an additional 1-1/4 lengths.

As Freedman revealed, the leaders’ role wasn’t scripted, though Lane synced with the gelding’s brisk exit from the gates.

“He’s a horse where, the more you tell him to do something he doesn’t want to do, he tends to work against you,” Lane said.

“When he was free flowing I just went with him and lucky he held on.”

Beskar’s latest start was only the third in his current preparation, positioning him ideally for Brisbane three-year-old specials.

“He is pretty lightly raced, and he handles this direction so that’s probably the logical step,” Freedman said.
