Racing NSW appoints new chief steward

Steve Railton is relinquishing his role as chairman of stewards but won’t be lost to Sydney racing.

Tom Moxon will take on the job of Sydney’s chief stipe from next month, succeeding current chairman of stewards Steve Railton.

Racing NSW announced the appointment on Thursday, confirming that Moxon would step into the role from June 1, while Railton will continue to work for the governing body in a senior officiating capacity via the new Stewards Control Room at Randwick.

Moxon has more than two decades of stewarding experience having worked under previous presiding stipes Ray Murrihy, Marc Van Gestel and more recently Railton, and Racing NSW chief executive Peter V’Landys AM has welcomed his elevation to the crucial role.

“Tom is a highly respected figure within the industry and has demonstrated outstanding leadership throughout his tenure with Racing NSW,” V’Landys said.

“His appointment ensures continuity and strong oversight in maintaining the high level of integrity that Racing NSW prides itself on, being the benchmark in world racing.”

Railton has enjoyed a long and successful career in racing, including over a decade officiating in Hong Kong.

V’Landys says the guidance he can provide to the NSW stewards’ panel via his new role will be invaluable.

“Steve Railton is a Group One human being and has provided diligent and conscientious service to the racing industry throughout his distinguished career,” V’Landys said.

“Steve has made a significant contribution to Racing NSW during his tenure as chairman of stewards and we are delighted that he will remain involved in a key mentorship role to continue to provide his experience to the broader integrity team.”
