Peter Snowden is backing Raging Force to bounce back as he maps out an unconventional preparation for the Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes at Flemington on Derby Day.
Rather than heading to this weekend’s Danehill Stakes, Snowden is considering testing the gelding against seasoned sprinters in the Group 2 Schillaci Stakes at Caulfield on Saturday week.
The Randwick trainer has deliberately steered clear of the $300,000 Group 2 Danehill Stakes and is weighing up whether to send Raging Force to the trials before resuming, following his unplaced run in the Run To The Rose.
In that 1200m event, the Cosmic Force gelding went too quickly in front and faded late, finishing seventh, more than four lengths adrift of winner Tempted. Snowden believes the run has not left a mark.
“He had a gut-buster,” Snowden said of the Run To The Rose.
“He went way too hard the other day. I gave him an easy week and he is nice and bright again now.
“The trial is nothing more than just a jump out and relax him.”
The Schillaci Stakes (1100m) — a weight-for-age race — looms as the possible return for star sprinter Giga Kick, providing a high-class contest if Raging Force lines up.
Alternatively, if Snowden opts to keep him at Randwick, the Group 2 Roman Consul Stakes (1200m) offers another lead-up option on the same day.
After four straight wins earlier this prep, Raging Force was once high in Coolmore Stud Stakes betting but has since eased to $15. The Danehill Stakes, featuring Rosberg, Tentyris and Legacy Bound among 14 entries, will likely shape the market further.
