She might be a spirited individual in her morning exercises, but Sequinned is progressing positively for her next outing in the Group 3 Red Roses Stakes on Thursday.
The three-year-old bay filly, a progeny of Irish sire Pinatubo, impressed with a commanding 2½-length win at Caulfield against her age and sex over 1200 metres, guided by James McDonald.
A similar outcome might be expected over the 1100m distance down the Flemington straight.
“I think we can (see the same again),” conveyed Chris Waller’s assistant trainer, Charlie Duckworth.
“She had a final gallop on Tuesday morning on the grass at Flemington. She is a bit of a handful as she carries her head in an unusual fashion but tries very, very hard.”
The Waller stable had entertained the notion of starting the filly in the Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m) this past Saturday, facing a considerably different level of competition than what awaits her in this contest.
“There’s a lot to like and she has galloped up the straight,” Duckworth added.
“Obviously with James on, who’s got very good hands, and he’ll get her to switch off and relax and do those little things right. She has to get the first half right.
“With Chris’ training style, he tries to get them to harness as much energy as they can and then really hit the line.”
“She’s more than capable of winning a race like this and slightly better next preparation.”
In 2024, Chris Waller and James McDonald joined forces to claim this race with Amelita.
