Sebonack stamps himself on the G1 Blue Diamond Stakes

By RS NewsWire on 05/02/2022 at 4:11 pm
Filled in: News - Blue Diamond Stakes

Sebonack has leapt to the second line of betting for Melbourne’s premier two-year-old race after his impressive debut win at Caulfield.

The Hawkes Racing-trained two-year-old is now the equal second favourite at $8 with Miss Roseiano for the Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield on February 26 after his win in Saturday’s Group 3 Chairman’s Stakes (1000m).

The Mick Price and Michael Kent Jr-trained Jacquinot eased slightly from $4 to $4.50 following Sebonack’s victory.

Co-trainer Wayne Hawkes said there would be no decision on a Blue Diamond start for the son of Capitalist until he sees how the colt comes through the victory.

Providing Jye Mcneil the third leg of a winning treble, Sebonack ($6) scored by 1-¼ lengths from Nanagui ($9) with Kiko ($9) a half-length away third.

“I just want to go home and see how he pulls up,” Hawkes said.

“This was a 1000-metre race around Caulfield and the Blue Diamond is 1200 (metres). There’ll be a full field and about ten times the pressure of today.

“There’s a little bit to go yet but winners are grinners and we’re happy.”

Hawkes said Sebonack had trialled well in the lead up to Saturday’s debut and the colt’s performance would be a good benchmark for the stable.

He said he now has a good indication of where some of the other two-year-olds in stable sit.

“We’ve got a few lined up over the next couple of weeks and I’m happy,” Hawkes said.

“You never quite know with them when they’re at home and then you come to race day and you parade them, but I was impressed the way he paraded and looked so well.

“I thought Jye might’ve given him a bit more of a dig out of the gates. He was a bit casual, but the horse took a couple of strides to get into gear, where at home he normally hits the ground running.

“I thought he’d jump and lead. He didn’t panic, he waited, and the rest was history.”
