Bold Secret will make his racing debut at Flemington on Saturday, and the colt carries a significant family legacy for trainer Phillip Stokes.

Entered for the VRC Member Sarah Hart Trophy, Bold Secret heads to the races following a trio of successful jump-outs at Pakenham, his most recent on July 8.

The son of Brazen Beau comes from a distinguished female line through dam Private Nancy, who traces back to Nancy Eleanor – a filly that handed Stokes his first black-type success in the Adelaide Guineas over two decades ago.

Nancy Eleanor was also the dam of Golden Slipper winner Phelan Ready, enhancing the pedigree behind Bold Secret.

“It’s a meaningful connection,” Stokes said. “The Broad family has been with me from the start, and they raced both Private Nancy and Nancy Eleanor.”

Craig Williams will take the ride on Saturday, although Joe Bowditch, who rode Nancy Eleanor, has done much of the preparation work with the horse.

Stokes revealed Bold Secret was nearly sold to Hong Kong before failing a vet check, a twist of fate that kept the promising colt in his Pakenham stable.

“He’s a talented horse. We gave him a quiet jump-out where he relaxed early and hit the line strong,” Stokes said. “This will show us where he fits heading into spring.”

Interestingly, last year’s winner of this race, First Settler, progressed to win the Group 2 Danehill Stakes before heading to the breeding barn.

The 2025 renewal has attracted a field of 10, with Shining Smile leading the weights at 62.5kg, offset by apprentice Logan Bates’ claim.
